CAN U HELP??!!..this 1s a challange!

I am of beginner/intermediate level and am currently having issues with modelling a ring (jewellery). I have modelled all but one major part that i just cant get right. Its a square plane of interlocking metal links that are supposed to symbolise knitted fabric. I have modelled them using nurbs and then lofting them plus a lot of mirroring and copy (instance) to create a square of links which i then turned into an editable poly (dunno if this was a gd move) ...but i have hit a wall. The square of knitted links has to cradle a pearl in its centre (as if a stone had been placed on a loose piece of cloth with a soft surface underneath).

How is this achievable???

I have tried soft section but the result is poor and no were near as organic looking as i would like the outcome to be... + the polygons in the form are to many to manipulate by hand.

Are there any modifiers that could achieve this?? i have tried bend etc and soft section as i said, and had a go with the cloth modifier also( as i already modelled what i wanted to the piece to look like with plane so i was hoping i could achieve the fabric look with that), but it just crashes the comp.

Really not sure if anyone can offer advice as i still cant figure out how to attachment an image.

Would appreciate anyone with confident advice getting back to me on this 1.

Cheers guys

If u think u might be able to help but need images to better understanding what im going on about then ill do my best to attach some after i figure out how! ha
