Not sure... but don't group. Use select-and-link. Also, a good layering system comes in handy.

I know it's kind of old thread, but... the linking is the reason why he can't use group on a certain object. If that object is already linked to another group. Or using some kind of IK constraints. It's not allowed because it would mess up the hierarchy.

Congrats, you found my signature.

more specifically, if any object is linked outside the group your grouping, there be no grouping!

Thus why you do not use groups, a messy faux hierachy

@herfst1 - He's newbie here, and in Max too, sure. But that doesn't mean he don't have experience with 3D related stuff.

P.S.: I love to use grouping, layering, linking, skinning all at once, you just have to write things down, or keep it in your had.

Congrats, you found my signature.

Wasn't asking you, Silard. Keep your comments towards me in your had, kinda tired of your jealousy (and you editing comments after I've had a go at you).

Nested layers, any other organization method in max is over convoluted dysfunctional unfinished nonsense, same with state sets or scene states or whatever the fuck they call them these days, in theory they should work, in practice they are infuriating, counter productive and bug ridden.

I use groups as a temp solution to selecting lots of objects, then ungroup them onto a nested layer of their own.

"if any object is linked outside the group your grouping, there be no grouping"

never knew this..happened to me a few times..good tip.

I don't want to derail this thread, but here's a question:

If you use a linking hierarchy to organise objects, is there a quick way to create a new instance of that hierarchy? I like groups from the point of view that you can quickly create a group and then instance it all over the scene by shift-dragging. You can't do that with a hierarchy it seems?

Yup you can just copy and paste the trees using the schematic view.

edit: or just crtl v the selected objects, it should retain the hierarchy.
