my installation of max 2009 64bit seems to hang at this point for about a minute and a half on our render farm but on my desktop it loads within seconds of this point. I’m trying to narrow down the possible reasons why, could someone tell me what exactly max is doing at this point?
any feedback is much appreciated, thanks

It looks like it's about to initialise the display to me. The interface comes first, then the display driver is loaded.

I could be wrong.

Nik, the whole screen is drawn, the only things missing are the grid and the tools in the bottom right corner (rotation zoom etc) so i suppose it is a workspace display thing. tried direct x and open gl but both are the same.

That's pretty much what I meant. Try updating drivers?

i could try that in the absence of any other ideas but the farm is booting 2008 within 10 seconds so i think it has to be an installation thing. i would put it down to 2009 being slow but it boots on my desktop as quickly as 2008.

thanks anyway.

Have you tried software rendering?

I had this problem. I had to delete a certain file. I'm pretty sure it was InfoCenter.gup in my projects folder.

i really should have explained the problem a little, here's a brief description.

we have an issue sending short jobs to the render farm, on 2008 if i sent a 40 sec test render to the farm via backburner it would boot up vray in 3-5 seconds and jump straight into the job.

With 2009 vray takes about 2 minutes to boot up before it starts to render, for an animation it's not an issue as it only boots once at the start but if you're sending lots of little one-offs it's a pain to wait 3 mins for a 50 sec render.

Whilst looking into the issue i realised that booting a full version of max on the blades also takes about 2 mins whilst booting a full version of 2008 takes 10 secs or so, they both race through the bootup but 2009 stalls at the point above and holds for 1.5 mins.

i would just chalk it up to another stunning "advance" in technology, a general 2009 thing but on my desktop max 2009 boots just as quickly as 2008 so it must be a setup issue. i just can't figure out whats different in the two setups to cause this.

as you can see max 2008 boots fine with the standard drivers and max 2009 boots fine on my desktop so i'll look into the driver thing but my gut feeling is that it's not the culprit.

Um... its where your stuff saves to as default. Mine makes loads of folders for import export and renders.

EDIT: If you get max open and go Customize>Configure User Paths it should tell you.

just checked, doesn't seem to be a project folder, ran a search on my comp for .gup files or anything with info centre in but came up empty.
