Camera tracking workflow?
show user profile  Westcoast13
Title says it all!

If you have a video that you want to composite 3d elements into, what's your workflow? I've watched several tutorials and the methods all involve third party software. Is that the case or can max (just upgraded to 2014) do it all itself?

agreed ^

If it needs to be tracked I prefer nuke. There is also a way to get 3ds max planes to read in aE as solids, and with the max camera along for the ride, theres no need for any motion tracking! Just switch out the newly created solid with other objects!!!

Here's an old test I did with matchmover(comes with Max).
The mech on the table is 3d.
Youtube made it look more jumpy than it is.
Anyway if you have max you have matchmover.

As always this is going to be a bigger project than I expected. Thanks for the responses fellas.

Not sure i will be convincing work to buy software just yet so matchmover might be the way forward.

Thanks for the comments, I'll post progress if/when I make some!

Yes third party software, certainly not inside the 3d app.
PFtrack is a good un

Workflow,
- create a sequence from the footage
- undistort that footage (you might get away with not doing it but you should) In a compositor or possibly the tracking program
- track it in external tracking program, pftrack, syntheyes, matchmover (never tried it in nuke!)
- export camera and nulls into 3d program
- view the footage through the imported camera (horrible in max)
- comp the renders back over the footage in compositing program

If you have a recent After Effects...you can 3D track in it...then use state sets to go back and forth from AE to MAX...etc.

3D tracking is definitely not the 'black magic' it used to be....

We've got AE CS5 here. That sounds good as I'm going to be under pressure to do this using only software that we already own!

I'll Google 'state sets' next... Noob alert! :/

Westie - AE CS5 I do not think has the 3D tracking built in....its only built into CS6 and later.....afaik.
