Buying a TV. I'm a total noon.
show user profile  9krausec
My lady wants a TV so she can watch something called 'Gossip Girl' on Friday nights (ffs that sounds hellish).

I've never purchased a TV before because I think they are a waste of time ironically enough. I know I want something flat, 40-50 inches that I can mount to a wall.

Would buying used off CL be a good/bad idea?

Is 4k really worth the extra money?

Brand suggestions? I'm a Samsung/Dell whore when it comes to screens.

Who is Gossip Girl and why doesn't she reveal her true identity?

I'm a noob at TVs but if I'm going to get one it's going to be flat, big, black and sexy (please no weird penis jokes... I know I set you up but control yourselves. We are adults goddammit.)

Thanks for any input before I surprise her with a TV.

Edit: title should be noob not noon. On my phone because I'm setting up the bat cave.

Don't buy it. You said it yourself, "So my gf can watch gossip girl." That's just about the worst excuse ever to buy a tv. Buy it for yourself. Buy it to watch Terminator 2. But don't buy it so your gf can watch shows teaching her to become a worse version of herself.

If I were in your shoes, tell her to buy it for you for christmas. If she REALLY wants it now, she'll buy it now. Problem solved.

mmm Hersft. Consolidation. I like it. The only thing is that she wanted to bring this old ass box TV to the new duplex we moved into and I was like, "Hell no, I don't want to deal with getting rid of some TV from the 90s when the time comes."

TBH, I'll probably end up watching BSG over again (or midget pr0n) on it. I guess I don't hate TV, I just hate mindlessly flicking through channels like a zombie. That's why we do not and never will have cable TV. If you want to watch something then be decisive and choose it beforehand I say.

Anyways, regardless of when I get it, still looking for suggestions. If it's not a computer monitor I don't know crap. IPS TV? lololol

Get a Samsung smart TV.
40" should be enough and you can those to a fair price.

I just bought one last week.
Connected the power, connected the WIFI and boom.... ready to go.

It got Netflix installed, facebook, web browser, apps, games radio, music streaming and a whole lot more...

I havent ever hook anything else to it at the moment.
No TV services or anything...

I can stream TV from the web from my laptop by clicking one button...
I can cast video and photots from my phone and iPad with one click.

Since Im not going to get a TV package as there is no longer any real reason thses day Im fine with the WIFI.

I might just connect the PS3 now that I got it to watch DVD/Bluerays once in a while :-)

Go Samsung...

Ive got a Samsung smart tv, its decent :) The only thing i dont like is the sound, very flat and no bass at all.Its nice to have Netflix on the tv instead of having to connect your laptop. Dont know about 4K, if the extra money isnt that much more i would definately go for it :)

I stand by my Samsung. They have the best smart tv features and interface IMHO.
4K is nice....although not super necessary.
Ive got a 55"

Love it.

Hook up power and wifi and boom! The smart features and little smart remote are pretty useful.

Thanks guys for the information. Samsung smart TV it is. I didn't even consider a smart TV since I didn't know how they would last the test of time (I guess it's sort of like a big smart phone). I was originally going to go with a Roku, but hell, a smart TV will work even better.

I'm going to have to send you guys some photos of my basement office I'm setting up too. You guys will dig it. I just killed an army of spiders last night to make way for my work cave.

So used or new? I try to buy everything used with the exception of electronics since there are so many variables (one dead pixel, ports not working, bunch of stuff only the test of time and use will show if the seller isn't being honest).

What's your opinion as far as TVs on Craigslist? Good idea, bad idea?

I wouldn't get an expensive 4k TV, but maybe look at last years model Samsungs or something.

I picked up an 'end of year clearance' flat screen Samsung a few years back to watch movies on, I've been quite happy with it. I forget what size it is, but it's plenty large enough to watch movies from across the room, and even non-HD content is not horrible to watch. -
