Bump mapping in the materials editor
show user profile  tileboy
Hi,

I'm pretty new to 3D Max and have been getting stuck following their tutorials. The bump mapping feature in the materials editor is not working at all, even if you use a black and white image for the bump. I'm wondering if some of my settings aren't set right or something isn't installed correctly and that's the problem, but this is only guessing. Any help is greatly appreciated.

bump mapping won't affect the geometry so doesn't affect the silhouette- it's a trick really- makes things look like they're more complicated than they really are (depending on the complexity of the image)
put a b&w image into the bump slot, turn it up and render to see the results
probably need to be uv mapped though

Thanks for the help. UV mapping isn't working, and neither is use of a b/w image. I'm seriously wondering if it's an issue of a plug-in that isn't activated.

Do bump maps not need a light to be set up first to highlight the bumps, or will the standard lights do this?
What lights have you got?, Also does the refraction reflection sliders under the rendered picture affect this.

Steve,

I'm so new to 3d Max I can't even answer your questions. I'm truly a newbie and don't even know how to set up lights - I'll find a tutorial about this. Thanks

Scale of bump is important in the mat editor too. Hence the need to uvw your object.

Thank you to everyone who responded. Finally figured out that bump maps can't be seen in the view ports and have to be rendered to be seen. I've only been learning this software for less than a week which should explain my ignorance.

Here's how to show the bump mapping in the viewport.

But you should really learn to use normal maps instead of bump maps, they are vastly superior.

Grotey, did you just model and texture an entire horse to show how to enable bump mapping in the viewport... ;)

Thanks for this informative tutorial. I think this feature is disabled in my version though. If I change it to show hardware map, it seems to become inactive, the selected object reverts back to before any materials were placed on it. It simply turns gray.

I just tried this again with a different material standard and this works. Thanks. For some reason it didn't work with the first material I tried.

Thanks again mrgrotey !
