Been working on thsi on and off for a little while now inbetween other things and thought I might as well start a WIP thread off.
I thought it was about time I did a car but didnt want to do some mundane modern sports car which is all you seem to see get done these days so I searched google for vintage racers and came up with the lovely Bugatti Type 35 from the 1920s.
Its going to be low poly with a budget of 15,000 tris and is still heavily in WIP mode, Im still really just blocking things out right now and virtually no optimising has been done.
Heres what the car should look like
One thing I love about this car is the reverse camber on the front wheels, really odd.
and heres where I have gotten to so far...

Obviously there is tons of work to do on it but any comments and crits are very wlecome.

You're doing Low Poly and you didn't post a wireframe, Have you lost your marbles!!?
Not a great deal to crit yet. Interesting choice of vehicle. I'm praying you give it some personality in the texture stage too, by ways of mucking it up a bit, wear marks on the tyres, little scratches where stones have flicked up, tiny bit of rust in places, etc

Glad you like it too :) I think its a great looking car.
Markoid: yeah there are millions of photos on google of it and got some half-decent blueprints to go by too.
reeves: bah, you dont know what you're missing, unless of course you have done low poly before, in that case... ...well I dont know know what in that case, but yes, low poly :)
Dave: hehe, I actually did make a wire frame image and even uploaded it to phtoobucket but decided as the mesh was at such an early phase it wasnt realy of any benefit and it has quite a few errors, but ok here it is anyway (no extra work since the last image)

[edit] oh and yeah i'll dirty it up a little bit but not too much, I always go over-baord with grunge.

Nice one Grote. Interesting how no one's mentioned the rockets in the background of the pic. Was that pic taken on your home planet?

no joey, you've got it all wrong. that's his sig's home planet, his home planet is much dirtier, and has more animals in each area that size, since it's not all that big and they like breeding.

Nice work, Mr. Grotey! Ohhh, I just want to jump in there and fix a few bad polys on the side of the car, near the front. But I can't... and I'm sure you can do it better than me. I'm looking forward to seeing how you progress. My original idea for a steampunk object for the contest was a car much like this - the only reason I didn't do it is because one of the requirements says that the item must be on sale after 1990. So I'm doing a vaccuum cleaner instead. But that little car really looks sweet!

Joey: Y'know even I hadn't noticed them until you said lol!
graphix72: cheers mate, ypu they've already been fixed, i was well aware of them and was waiting for someone to metion them ;) cheers mate.
radic: 90s? 15,000 triangles per car in a 90s game? blimey.
Update: Finished the suspension and steering system and added bonnet/hood belts, pretol cap, bugatti emblem, braking levers .etc sitting pretty at 11,804 at the moment but not finished yet and not really optimised much.
here's the images including pointless and time-wasting renders...
yeah yeah oversize, blah blah ;) deal with it, it doesnt happen often :p

Nice progress, Mr. Grotey! I can't wait till you start texturing! This baby is looking sweet!
Radic: How come if you can't model you have such an awesome online portfolio?!? I followed the link and looked at some of your work. It's amazing.
Westcoast: Where's that baby crying? I think even today you have to budget your polys if you are working for a game - and Mr. Grotey seems a pretty good judge of where the extra detail is needed and where he can do without. I don't think the model will suffer greatly by having a poly cap, at least it's not a ridiculous cap under 1000 polys, or something like that. I agree, with a vintage car like this, you do need more polys than most modern cars.
edit: Mr. Grotey, could you post any blueprints you have for this car? When I have time next year, I'd like to do my own version from scratch. Not trying to out-do you, my version would actually be steampunked. But I would appreciate the blueprints and such. Thanks!
