2 buckets on a 6 core Xeon Processor with mental ray?
show user profile  Nanne
I just noticed that mental ray is only rendering with 2 buckets on my 6 core Xeon 5650.

And according to CPU-Z there are 6 cores and 6 threads... shouldn't it be 12 threads? Is multi or hyper threading turned of in the BIOS you think or could it be something else?

This might not be useful but have you tried putting a bit of sand on it usually works..?

Hyperthreading can be turned on and off in BIOS if available.
Other than that, check the affinty of 3dsmax through Task Manager -> Processes -> Right-click 3dsmax.exe -> Set Affinity...

Yeah, buckets of sand... I get it :P

Max is set to use all processors (0-5) in the task manager. I'm gonna reboot now and see if that helps.

Hyper-threading was turned off - doh! :P Six month in front of this computer and not until now do I first notice this! :P

Now I get up to 8 buckets... hmm, but still, shouldn't there be 12?

So you only had 6 threads active and Mental Ray used all but 4.
Now you have 12 threads active and Mental Ray still uses all but 4.
Seems odd.

Yes, come to think of it, that's an correct observation.

But in the Task Manager all 12 graphs for CPU usage hits the ceiling, telling me it utilizes 100%.

I'm using Max 2012 64bit, 12GB RAM on Windows 7 Professional.

Perhaps Mental Ray isn't used to the odd number of cores?
Perhaps Mental Ray is more used to 2, 4, 8 or 16 cores? As opposed to 3, 6, 12 and so on?
Just a shot in the dark. I don't know anything about Mental Rays hardware compatibility.

I just did a test render in 2011, here I see al 12 buckets.

I used a simple scene with a teapot in glass on a reflective floor, default lighting. But when saving and rendering the same file in 2012 I only got 2 or 4 buckets and the rendering took 10sec rather then 8sec as it did in 2011.

Mr Stabby: Perhaps if you use max 2012 Mental ray will always use all but 4 cores? So if you have 4 threads active it will use 0 threads :O
What if you only have 2 threads active? Will Mental Ray use -2 threads?

But is this a visual bug or does it have effect on performance? Just a few seconds doesn't really matter but that was on a very simple scene. I'll have to dig deeper into that some day, right now I need to get rendering, no time to lose!
