Brush on a spiral help
show user profile  missy
Heya everyone, long time

Guess what...yeah I am stuck!!

I have to do a gun cleaning kit and I am stuck on the brushes.
They look a little something like this:

I have tried making a spring selecting an edge>loop>extrude>map....looks terrible

I have tried helix> added lots of segments> select an edge>loop> convert to vertice>extrude....looks terrible

I cannot use hair and fur as when completed, it needs to go into a lesson plan using the NGrain viewer that does not support hair and fur.

I would be grateful if anyone has some sort of smarty pants way of doing this!

Could you make the bristles a plane with texture (plus alpha) and twist it round the shape?

Helix shape....tessellate outer faces, use Line Per Vertex script (by some talented dude ;))

, make the splines renderable, add a bit of noise...done. :)

There was some info (maybe this forum) that showed how to get the outer edges of the helix even and vertical like a coil rather than the renderable view..can't think, just waking up.

edit: found it...Sweep :)

Ahh my bad, you need a twisted wire base for your bristles, use this method....

Use the base mesh/selected faces to hold your splines/bristles and the new spline object can be your twisted wire stem.

Caffeine rocks :)

Edit: hmm no... use hair instance on selected faces for your bristles, much more control, you can collapse the hair mod when done :)

Hello Nik my forum love ;)

Hiya FX (Garp)

Thank you both for the very quick replies.
Hmm.. two very different ways. I shall try both, cool I like alternatives :)

I shall let you know how I got on at end of the day.

How is everyone?
Who is the new pain in the butt?
Who are the new admin?

Again Thanks xx

*Edit: can't use hair...the viewer it needs to go in doesn't support hair or fur

"Hello Nik my forum love ;)"....'snigger' :)

You CAN use hair, it's easier and gives you more control, use geometry instance then collapse the stack when your done, it leaves no traces of hair :)

This tis what I mean, forget the geometry instance , you can take a snapshot of the hair when done....

Needs bit of tweaking on hair distribution, and stem twists, but I think you can see the gist of it :)
That's all hair present, but quite high poly as a result.

Thank you Sangre...nice try but the filaments need to extrude at same angle :)

Edit: Just trying the sweep on the helix atm FX, couldn't get a plane to twist correctly around my stem but about to try some 'hair' on the sweep. Thanks for your interest and help x

No problem at all...I've been staring at race tracks for too long...this is fun....I'm waiting for a phone call anyway..killing time :)

I used the top mesh to distribute hair...going to tweak the hair a bit, it looks too wild.
