Bronze/Brass Material
show user profile  Nolan

There is a part on my animation that is essentially a bronze tube at first i gave it a pretty much orange/yellow color and that was pretty much it. It looked amateurish so I tried making it look more metallic by using Mr. Grotey's gold material tutorial as a reference (Which is pretty great). My boss said he didn't like the glassy look. I cant seem to get a reflective metallic surface to not look glassy. I've been searching around and they all look way to polished for what I am looking for. Here are some reference images of what I am looking for.

I feel like these do the trick of what I am looking for but maybe a little more saturated with that gold color.

What renderer are you using. This is very easy in mental ray. Take a look at the arch and design material in the help files with particular care at the reflection glossiness section.

Now are you talking about the settings with all of the presets? I tried that. I like how it reflected brushed steel preset but I couldnt make it any color other than black...

If you set the reflection colour to an orange/brown it will your reflections will be tinted that colour. Assuming there is something to reflect.

Yes but my Material Editor is different. Is it because im using 3ds Max 2011?

yes, you use the slate editor, you can change it, its the first menu you get on the material editor window, something like mode or smt like that

edit: tho I suggest you learn the SLATE editor, its how modern material editors are, the arch and design properties and setting should be the same, somewhere to the right, not sure.

Yes but in the material editor there's no arch & design just architecture which has a much different brushed metal material. The diffuse reflects much differently than it does in yours and it reflects much differently.

Have you got Mental Ray set as the renderer? If not, the MR materials won't show up.

A&D is not the same as the architectural materials.

Does mental ray normally wreck havoc on render times? Because this is also a part of a 1350 frame animation.

It depends on what sample settings you are using for render, lights, materials, etc. Learning to control the settings (the balance between quality and speed) is part of the skill of it.

oooh, it sorta does, and take care with final gather, its view dependent, you might get flickering, make sure you set it up right, make some draft test renders first.
Also the presets that Mental ray gives you at the Final gather precision aren't well optimized, you better set them manually to speed up rendering .

Hmm well the renders are coming out all fuzzy... I have never used mental ray as a tenderer so ill go look up some tutorials on that but it also looks like my material wont even apply. Heres a pic of my render and material editor.
