bring out yer spaceships
show user profile  Setherial
Hey guys

I feel like designing a spaceship, I have a few basic ideas but I want to gather as much reference material as possible before I start. One can never have enough inspiration before starting something. It would be great if you guys can help me out, the web is a big place and simply searching for spaceships on google doesn't really bring out the best.
If you know of any really cool designs, be it from film or video games or just individual artists doing spaceship concepts post your links here.

cheers

Seth

I still really love the designs from EVE, not just for the tight design aesthetic for each race but also for the uniqueness of the ship designs across the board.

Here's a little of the original concept art:

http://staff.ccpgames.com/asgeir/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=5

and there's a wealth of screenshots of the hundreds of ships to pore over:

I'd say for sheer uniqueness the sleek, organic Gallente ships or the assymetrical utilitarianism of the Caldari ships are good bets to look at.

Look forward to seeing what y'come up with!

bonzepeet: looked up EVE was the first thing I did. Thanks for that link with concept art, that's the stuff I was after. Most EVE screenshots are so obscure they give me little. I'm sure they are great during gameplay but as far as screenshots go most are disappointing.

TimTamFin: Feng Zhu has the stuff, the one you posted isn't a ship though. I did find some good inspiration on his website.

Just for your information, I'm looking into animals as well, to add organic shapes to my design. The main shape I'll be going for will be based on a whale skeleton. Lobsters and crabs are great as well. There's a lot of cool stuff to find in the world of animals.

seth - It's mostly down to my eternal lack of free time...

I've been on zany advertising deadlines for the past few months (have you seen the Bavik 'go nuts' adverts over there yet?) so I usually end up with only a few days free, here and there. And I'll usually spend those on music or lying on the floor sighing with relief.

Still, I should be starting at a studio next month so in theory I might have some free time again. At least I hope so, anyway ; )

Hey Seth,

I've seen that before! It's in my home town and has been a field trip destination more than once...though it's been quite a while since I was in grade school.

If you are serious about using the skeleton as inspiration. And if you want more whale skeleton reference, aaaannnd you can wait a week or so, I can get you more shots of that very skeleton from many angles. My mom still lives there and I should bring the kid to visit grandma anyway.

Lemme know if you are interested.

This might possibly be the worst response you'll get

but honestly. I reccomend finding a copy of darius twin

It was a game for SNES and it featured fish themed spaceships.

Very odd game but it might prove to be inspirational in its amazing 16 bit goodness

if your really keen to look at eve you can download the game free and there is community piece of freeware that allows you to grab the models of the ships into max , so you can really have a good look.
