boolean problem!!!

hey all.

im tryint o subract an object using the boolean command.although in my operation ive got the subtraction selected,when i click to subtract the object,instead of a subtraction happening its becoming a union.

help anyone?

the exercise im doing is making walls and then opening up doorways.just to make things more clearer.

Booleans should be avoided whenever possible.
And there are far cleaner and faster way to do what you're doing.
