Bone Adjustments/Beginner Question
show user profile  Layoric
How do you adjust the length of bones after you create them? Also after I create the left side skeleton on a human, what is the best way to copy them for the right side and still retain the HI Solver coordinates/handles?

Thanks

You go to Animation menu > Bone Tools, then hit the button on top to turn on Bone Edit Mode. Bones can now be moved around freely. Just be sure to turn it off when you're done ;)

As for mirroring IK, I wish I knew.

You shouldn't have more than 3 IK Chains in any humanoidal leg so it's really no big problem to simply mirror the leg bones and re-apply the 3 chains to the opposite leg.
It would save a couple of steps tho, I know what you mean.

Wait, three? I've seen only one, where you move the foot and the knee bends accordingly. I'm curious to know where the other two might go, it sounds delightfully complex...

Well, I was counting the leg, foot and toe. If you are just wanting to mirror the chains, it's no big deal to re-apply the HI solver but, when you've already created and linked your chains to control objects it is kind of a pain to re-create the exact same setup for the opposite leg.
Here is the example pic of what I like to use....I borrowed the basic idea off of an old tutorial from Paul Neal's website years ago.

[edit]...sorry Layoric, I read your post too fast and missed the last part about control handles...that is a bitch.
:D

That's an interesting setup. I have scripts, wire parameters, and even Reaction manager handling everything in the foot with sliders - now that was a bitch to mirror.

I have to wonder if there's a script somewhere to assist in this.

Surely there is....but you have to look at the positive side of re-creating the entire thing manually, which is, repetition--the more you repeat something, the more easily you can remember the steps without looking at your notes/help files.

Or watching the whole tutorial video again for each side... Yeah, I see what you mean!

At least it's only needed twice. Now, if I had to manually set up IK and/or scripted systems for, say, a centipede, then I'd be ticked :P

I like your new sig image, BTW.
