boat floating with water

I am trying to animate a boat that moves with the waves up and down and that also drives front.
I managed to make it move up and down with the waves but don't manage to make it go front at the same time in a proper way, I used animation constraint and path constraint.
I am kind of stuck now, it looks like something possible though, any idea?

Conform (spacewarp) a plane to your water, (attachment constraint) a point helper to that plane, parent your boat to that point helper in some way (group, link, constrain, etc), animate the plane... you might have to keyframe the boats orientation

might be able to do something clever like attach two helpers to a thin plane with a few segments, parent the boat to the helper in the back and use a look-at constraint on the boat pointing to the first helper.

thanks for your answer,
I created the space wrap, point helper,etc ..put all together but come to a problem when I key frame the boat.
When I use auto key, max ask "are you sure you want to animate the object", then I say yes and the boat moves from left to right but doesnt move anymore up & down with the waves.

if you just link the boat to the helper you should be fine, also I just tested it quick and you don't need to use any sort of look at constraint. With attachment constraint the helpers align themselves with the planes surface direction, so all you need to do is link (select and link tool) the boat to the helper

so really all it needs to be is - conform a plane to the water, attachment constrain a helper to the plane, link your boat to the helper, animate the plane

Hi Digs,
yep, that much I had done and it worked but the problem comes when I try to animate the boat to drive ahead.
When I animate it, it looses the connection it had to the plane movement and the boat just goes straight from left to right without being connected to the plane anymore.
dont know what to do there.. :-/

move the plane fwd!! of course! now I got it!

Ok, I tried it now, it works, the motion is a little too "straight" somehow, I am checking what I can do for that..

I would probably hand animate the rotation of the boat.. especially if its the focus of the animation.

keyframed animation is your friend

Thanks again digs, your tips have been really helpful!

In between, I have been reading on a old post that I can play with the weight of the attachement constraint to smooth that up but I tried first to increase the sea plane polygons quantity, so I created a "finer" plane with more polys, became a little slow to compute in the viewport but the result was better.

Anyway, I think you are right, I better try to animate it "per hand" so to say and see what comes out.
( and I will still use the attachment constraint to animate some ice bergs in the water :-)
