Hey guys, I'm at work right now and can't spend a lot of time replying to this thread. I'll follow-up this evening when I get home...
Thanks for your feedback so far...

Cheers everyone. To answer some of the questions that were brought up...
Why isn't Softimage on my list? For the same reason that Maya isn't on this list. If I switch 3D apps I want to get away from Autodesk completely. I suppose the only other app that ought to be on this list is Lightwave, which I've never had much interest in learning so I left it off.
What will I be using 3d software for? General purpose 3d modeling, rendering, and animation. What specifically exactly??? Probably spaceships and robots, future cities, etc. And eye-candy user interface elements for projects I'm actually getting paid for. ;) I am not pursuing a job as a 3d artist per se, but I do plan on re-upping my game and getting more proficient in the 3d space as it applies to next generation web design and application UI design. If nothing else so that I can more effectively manage 3d ui design projects, for which I see great potential in my line of work.
Really what it comes down to is..... are all Autodesk products sinking ships? Is Blender so promising that I should hop on that bandwagon now?? Is Modo really as cool as it looks? How come nobody voted for C4D?... dd where are you? ;)
Decisions, decisions...

Lightwave is currently being overhauled. It's called Core and they've been hyping it as something unbelievable and groundbreaking. They've recently released some info on it and I'm not that impressed :p.
Modeling is quite similar in modo and lightwave, before core is released anyway. I find the lack of modifiers or anything procedural quite disturbing, but otherwise they are ok. I quite like the fully integrated real time renderer in modo, and I've been trying to find something similar for max. Core will also have realtime renderer apparently.
Softimage has awesome nodular programming system, which I absolutely love, but I think modeling in it is quite horrid (people sometimes disagree) and overall I find it sluggish to use.
I haven't used c4d.
How about Houdini? Very cryptic interface, but has powerful node based programming system similar to softimage's, which goes even deeper. Modeling seemed quite cumbersome though and it's expensive.
I also keep hearing that there is something major being done to Max right now.

ehhhhh, don't recommend Houdini for modeling if you think Softimage is bad, Houdini's modeling is a pain.
Personally I love modeling in Softimage, once you break through the interface it becomes very fast and intuitive, I love it more than modeling in Lightwave and it took me a very long time to find something I liked better for modeling than Lightwave.

Infinity Shader ?
What are the capabilities of the real-time renderer in modo ?

I couldn't find any technical specs, but check the video on that page for a quick demo.

Thanks. Guess I need to try it.
This looks more like vray-rt, than a high end 60 fps rasterizer.
To anyone who's used modo - how real-time is it ?

I was pretty impressed with Modo 401 when I saw the product tour. Still haven't played with the software yet. It seems like the coolest kid around, except it's missing a lot of functionality that all of its competitors have... like it doesn't seem to have the powerful animation/rigging capabilities that Max/C4D have. But if Modo keeps growing maybe they will some day. If Modo were as complete as the others, I'd probably buy it.
[edit]
Looking at that product tour again, Modo actually has more animation capability than I remembered it having. But I still didn't see anything about dynamics or character animation tools.
