Biped / Bones Trajectories?

This is something I've been working around for a while using tricks and per frame keyframing for detailed animations and such, but I wanted to ask to see what I must be doing wrong.

I have a character rigged with a biped skeleton, but it's carrying a sword, and I have an animation where that character pulls his sword from it's holster. The sword is a regular max bone, it's connected to the diamond bone on the biped so it can be moved freely around the model, what I want to know is what type of trajectory curve do I need to set the max bones to so they match up with the types of curves the biped uses?

This is because I can't figure out how to set the bipeds default curve type, but the bones can be set to use the little drop down box next to the autokey button, I want them both to use the same type of curve, thanks!
