best way to make a brick chimney ?
show user profile  DannyMax
Anyone know of a fast way to make an old chimney like in the picture below, I want to use it with the physx plugin so it have to be separate parts and not just a tube.

this is the way I have been doing it so far.

I make a brick and a spline circle and set the bricks path to the spline
Then I use the snapshot tool to copy the brick along the path
I then have a ring of bricks that I copy upwards using the array tool.

it works but maybe theres a better way ?
anyone know of a script maybe ?

Noob time... I tried this but I have some Qs. How would you automate the offsetting of each 2nd row of bricks? How do you rotate multiple elements around the parent's pivot and not their own individual pivots? How do you detach multiple elements to become unique objects? Phew..

detach all the second rows and rotate
put the pivot to the center beforehand though
then reattach if you need to

This might help, selecting the odd rows might be a pain in the ass though, maybe there is some maxscriptable way to do it automatically...

Just do the bottom two rows of bricks using a cylinder, rotate the second row, then clone then up to the required height of the chimney and taper the whole thing.

Bloody noobs :p

But if you taper, aren't you distorting the proportions of the bricks at the top?

kiko, the way you did it, doesn't the whole thing remain one element still? I thought DannyMax needs each brick to be a separate object for physx, so my question still stands as to how you detach each individual brick, and do you even need to do this?
