I like to start a debate concerning the most powerful graphics cards for 3DS max people with first had experience please post you render times and other experiences with you cards. I'd also like it if people don't spam this post with talk of quadro cards we all know there suppose to be amazing for 3d applications but I don't know anyone who can afford one. I think we're mainly looking at the geforce 8 and 9 series aswell as the high end Ati cards.

So what works for you?

Rendertimes have nothing to do with graphics cards, and probably the best one is the most expensive one you can afford pretty much
But I have absolutly no faith in gamer cards (maybe I should get a quadro or something myself one day) I still have a nvidia 6600 :)

Heh, ok then. I do like the thought that next time I buy a pc the onboard gfx could be better than mine now.

Why is quadro the worst thing to do, just curious, always thought that quadros are for vid cards as xeons are for CPUs, and never knew exactly why and how they are better.

well, i have been wondering about the performance/difference of the gf/quadro cards for some time

last year i got hold of a nVidia Quadro rep in Holland during some 3d show (where i met zap, and some other cool geeks) i saw my chance and asked all i needed to know

long story short:
quadro is a geforce card with a manufacturing process/components controlled by nVidia
the pricechange 'only' gives you a tested top quality card with certified drivers and speical support towards your 3d needs (like building a flightsim or other special 3d device)

you are by no means buying more performance!

in fact, the rep told me the geforce8800gtx is faster than the top of the line quadro (at the time)

if you need performance and return on investment you need to stick with geforce cards
if you need a reliable 3d solution that has to last you need a quadro

i hope that clears it for ppl with the same questions as i had
and because of that little conversation i bought a 8800gtx and not a quadro which leaves me with enough investment room to buy the nextgen gf for my new wks (prolly gf9800gx2 or gtx)

Thanks for clearing that up soontekk I had a feeling the same was true I think I'm personally going to try and get the 9800GTX great bang for your buck.

I think another myth is that sli really makes that much difference every benchmark I've seen has little difference. I think most should avoid sli until it's properly integrated into software design and windows vista or windows 7 most likely.

here's a great site if you want to compare graphics cards

I'm still interested in what your rigs are and what kind of performances you guys and gals are all getting out of em...
