Beer texturing

Hi,

I was trying to do a glass full of beer for a small animation, but got the texturing all wrong...
I did a glass mat for the glass (of course) and a liquid to emulate the beer. But i cant get even close to the real thing (dont have to be photorealistic). So far i got a nice chamapanhe look.
I had problems doing it i guess because of the interaction of the background + glass material + beer material. When i get a proper glass look the beer material goes all wrong.
Can anyone help me on this? I guess i dont have to say that i am not good texturing. So any tip pointing me in the right direction would be great.
I am using max 9 and mentalray.
the materials are standard with a refract(base) material (mental ray) and a bitmap for reflection cause i dont have an environment to reflect.
(as i dont drink beer for more than 6 years i was googling for images for ref as i told you before i can get it right)

Thanks for the link but i dont get how to do the fog material... is it a falloff material? ive tryied to use a gradient ramp in the difuse but it didnt help... -----------

Hi,

I didnt have the time to mess around with this today, but i got this. I think this looks better (the beer but i dont like the look of the glass. (Well let me remind you all, i dont drink so i dont know if its looking good or not, just feel that is better).

I toke the refraction from the beer material and put a gradient ramp in the opacity. And also tryied to take the reflexion of the logo from the glass by lowering the glossiness from the refraction in the glass material, but the render time almost doubled. (anytips to solve this?)

1. you've posted the same image twice

2. "i dont drink so i dont know if its looking good or not" thats got to be the most pathetic excuse for not getting it right I've heard in my life. I dont drive a tractor but I know if a model I make looks like one or not.

You are right about that, i just wanted to say it dont have it in my brain(the image), a bad habit i have, trying to do all from my mind. But i want to do it right so i am posting here trying to improve. And as far as ive seen all this time this is a good place to learn.

That's what google images is for, never work from your head if you are trying to recreate some that already exists, if there's an image of beer look at it and try to see whats happening in the image (regarding how to recreate it) you're destined to fail by doing it from memory. That thread I linked to has a great pic of beer to reference from. you can see it gets darker the more depth you have to look through thats why people were suggesting fog (such as volume fog or advanced material properties because that would simulate that darkening effect if done correctly

I saw the pic from the other topic a really great image (kind of made me sad since i dont have a clue how to get my beer to look like it).
I tryied to emulate the darker part of the beer using the gradient ramp i told u about earlier cause i didnt undestand how to use the fog to do it. It seens a little better but i know that its not looking like that.
to be honest i think the ramp helped to make it look deeper but it didnt help at all to chage the color, also tried to do the color change with a fallof material but i didnt got what i expected (probably i dont quite understand the falloff material. I will keep trying when i get any closer i will put a pio here.
Any guideness would be great as well =)

I guess it is more like it. What u think?... Of course i couldnt get the color to change much but it looks as a beer to me (doesnt look as the ref from the link u gave) -----------

If you are serious about getting the image to look right, you will have to take the time to learn things you dont know, or arent used to. Look at alot of reference, read the manual on fog and water/particle effects in max and try try try, if you fall on your face atleast youve learnt something you can use later - under no circumstance settle for 2nd best.

I started to read a lot about particules, and after this i will start to read more about fog and water (usually i do that stuff in post production, easier and quiquier for the stuff i needed so far) but u are right in the end i will at least learn more and thats what im trying here Thanks for the advices
