Batch editor/converter
show user profile  9krausec
Hey guys. Can anyone recommend a batch converter? Something that can handle a queue and convert .3dm (Rhino) to .3ds?

I'm doubtful that there is such a think (been looking at Okino stuff too).

Have about 300 Rhino files that need to be converted and seeking out a way that isn't long hand (opening each one up and processing them).

Thanks my MF folks. Hope everyone is doing well.

Can you batch export to STL in Rhino?

A quick look online tells me rhino has a command line tool (like lots of godd apps)
http://wiki.mcneel.com/developer/commandline

I would make a python script that loops through a folder and executes rhino like that for each one. I could help you with that if you like that part would be simple. You'd just need to work out the commands for rhino.

OR a batch file

@Nik- I don't know how to batch import anything in Rhino. I found this - http://www.rhino3d.com/resources/?id=631

But it doesn't really work automated like it says it did.

@reeves1984- Where you born on 1984 or is that after the novel? (Just noticed that after all this time, haha). Also, thank you for the offer! I'm going to exhaust all my resources before I'd ask you to take up the time to do some programming on my behalf. None-the-less I really appreciate your offer.

I played around with PolyTrans all day today (well for a large chunk of the day) and so far I'm really impressed with nuGraf/Polytrans stand alone. Batch exports files really nice from SW or Rhino or whatever to whatever you want it exported as.

I'll keep you guys updated. Thanks again for the offer Reeves, I might take you up on it after I bang my head against the wall enough.

Update-

I found a awesome solution for batch editing (among a slew of other great import and export functions). PolyTrans is exactly the solution I've been looking for the past 4 months now.

The next step now that I've found the solution is implementing it by developing a "simple" MEL Script Batch converter that utilizes Polytrans.

Polytrans command instructions can be found in this google doc thing that I generated -

Shared Google Document

I'll look into getting a crash course in MEL and post whatever questions here (Ironically in MAX forums...) I have some background in code but it's been a while and I'm more than rusty. The end game here is to batch convert a bunch of Rhino (.3dm) files that have a Polymesh in them to Maya files.

Thanks guys!
