Basing mesh off texture
show user profile  Varine01
Hey, is there a way to apply a texture to a mesh and then form the mesh into the shape of the image on the texture? I drew a bunch of designs for things and it would be way easier to make if I could apply them to the mesh and then form it around the outlines.

Yeah, it's called 'displacement mapping'. In the Max Help file there is a info and instructions regarding it.

EDIT: Thanks, man, but not really what I meant. I want to be able to deform the mesh by hand by moving the vertices around, but not have it distort the image, so I can make a plane and have the texture map on it and then form it to the shape I want without having the texture move and distort with the mesh.

add a uvw map ontop of your edit poly in your modifier stack then go down below the stack and click the show end result button (looks like a tube or something, second button from the left under the applied modifiers panel) now you can play with your edit poly and it wont affect the texture

I had to click Preserve UVW's.

Thanks for the responses though.
