Basic Animation Problem...
show user profile  Westcoast13
I always come back here with basic animation questions, mainly because my job involves animating, very occasionally. So i have basically forgotten everything i learn by the time i need to use it again.

My problem this time is...

I have 2 solid lumps, connected with 2 wires in a line. ie, lump - wire - lump - wire, to clarify.

I need to animate them moving to manoeuvre them out of a tight space through a hole.

I have tried to rig it but just cant seem to get all elements working as i'd like. I know this is so simple for someone who knows what they are doing, so any help is as always really appreciated!

Cheers.

Hmm, I don't really understand.
Can you illustrate some more what it is about? What is moved and controlling what? What kind of manoeuvre is it? Etc.

Cheers for the response mate. (edit... mates)

I cant post up exactly what it is as its for work but this is a basic mockup of the situation i have. I need to get the blue part out of the hole on the front on the box. The cables can bend but the boxes can't.

I'm sure its dead easy to rig but i've been looking into it for ages and can't figure it out! As i said, rigging/animation has been a tiny part of my job up until now!

Reactor rope, animate one block, and attach the second one to the rope?

Do you need to:
- move one block and have the other one follow?
- move the two blocks and have the wire react to traction/gravity (like a rope)?
- pull the wire and have all the rest follow?
In the rig that you want, what is manually animated and what is controlling the motion of the rest?
For the wire between the blocks, a simple hose extended primitive might do...

The whole assembly is connected and various parts will need moving (there are other obstacles in the box that i havent mocked up!).

I guess, "move the two blocks and have the wire react to traction/gravity (like a rope)?" best describes what i want to happen!

This tutorial shows how cloth is used to drive a chain and have it react to obstacles.

Well, i've done some tuts and i cant make reactor work for me. I just don't have enough hours in the day any more to learn everything i need to!! :(

But, i think i have made a work-around by using the hose primitive, linked to dummys and path constraints on the two box pieces.

With reactor rope, all i seem to find is how to get it swinging as if under its own weight (or with a weight on the end) but i cant see how to make it work so that it follows a part and stays under some tension (as if wire not rope).
