Baking Ambient Occlusion with alpha?
show user profile  zenonithus
Hey Folks, wonder if anyone can suggest the best way to go about this?

I have alpha hair slightly going over the forhead of my character and I want to bake out the occluded shadows and intergrate into the diffuse.

I've been trying to gather info on rendering ambient occlusion with alpha, though I cant find anything that works for sure. I take it I then use the render to texture tool to bake it in?

Any adice on this would be ace!

If it renders the way you want in camera renders then you can render it to texture, but an explicit ambient occlusion pass probably won't work with alpha.

Put a skylight in the scene, put a pure white texture on the head, and render to texture a Complete map, then multiply it over the diffuse map in PS. You might actually get better results for this in scanline than MR, but it'll take longer.

Cool, cheers scotch. Good midea with the skylight, I think thats more the sort of shadow I'm looking for than the occlusion ;)

Thanks for the heads up Silard. Will have to explore xnormal. I've been hearing good stuff about it for a while.
