AVG what the hell!
show user profile  zeefusion
I have just completed the latest AVG update it its not letting me get on to various websites. It says Unable to access the network in Chrome and in FireFox it says page not found. This is for websites such as Chaos Group and Sky. It thinks they are possible security threats.

Has any one else experienced this problem?

My advice:

Uninstall AVG, it has got worse and worse in the last three years, and install Microsoft essentials. It's one product Microsoft actually get right.

Avira antivir is also supposed to be good, but it does occasionally give you a popup advertising their other products (im also using security essentials)

Got worse over the years? As in, it was good before?
I remember looking around for antivurs some 5 years ago and both AVG and Notrton were notorious for their false positives.

I heard good things about Avira.
I'm using Avast myself, which seems to be losing its reputation, but I can't be bothered to change

Avira pissed me off with their constant pop ups. Trust me, it's not occasional, it's incessant. It's now been wiped from my computer, never to return.

Well that's that then... there's no antivirus on the market with a good reputation :D

The best anti-virus in my mind is common sense.

But, that's like saying you can have sex so long as you both say you're clean and you pull out in time.

Microsoft Essentials, is, like Nik says one of the things Microsuck have actually gotten right over the years.

Avast is... losing reputation, and was one of the best 'free' anti-viral suites around for a long time. She was good for a time, but age has taken it's toll.

Avira is... an annoying headache, like a girl who won't just leave you alone.

Norton and MacAffee are the £3,000 whores who leave you feeling dissatisfied with life.

LD, has your girlfriend taken a vacation without you?
You seem bitter.

free stuff is not developed by interweb monks living in caves but is in fact funded by advertising ?

I am shocked.

yup. avoid warez and you'll avoid most of the nasties.

the number of nasties a product can detect determines how good it is, not whether it annoys you.

turn off the auto-crap detect which slows your machine down.

also there seems to be a confusion between firewall (which should be on all the time) and av, which doesn't require constant scanning unless you download a load of crap.

load random crap for testing into a vm or onto a spare drive not connected to your main system.

One thing that really annoys me with AVG is their feckin toolbar. I just can't get rid of it!
After launching the browser about a dozen times, it comes back.

@Garp: hehe... No, she just has a fever... And, in other news, we've been sleeping on the floor in our new house for a week because the company meant to deliver our mattress are a bunch of illiterate, braindead, useless monkeys. So, actually - yes, a little bitter. But mostly due to a lack of strong coffee and cigarettes. It will pass.

Few weeks ago, before tossing out my old system drive i figured it be cool to check how many bugs i had gathered over the years since i had been running the same win installation with no antivirus for around 2-3 years. MB reported 4 instances of a tracking cookie, yeh im still convinced antivirus programs are useless junk.
