Autodesk Certification

I am scheduled to take my first certification test in a few days and I have a few questions.

Has anyone taken any of these tests? If so, what can I expect?

I downloaded their test prep paper, all three pages of it. I have no idea where to find answers for some of the items even though I have been using the program for over a decade now.

"Compositing - Demonstrate how to composite multiple layers together" I have never done this in Max, I use After Effects for this. Any suggestions on how to do this in Max?

"Animation - Change Interpolation Methods" I assume this means IK vs FK? If not, what is it then?

"Modeling - Differentiate Workflow" I am guessing this is in reference to poly modeling, edge modeling, NURBS, etc.

"Rendering - Identify Pas Types" Say What? Like AO pass, specular pass, etc?

"Rigging/Setup - Identify Controller Usage" I will need to know more before I even look this one up...

Here is the link to the original Doc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated on ALL the listed topics. I am paying for the test myself so I don't really feel like failing...

if you are taking an autodesk certification test. I must tell you that the certificate is almost useless.
I have my certification, but the important thing behind it was the course I took to get started.

The important thing is the portfolio you can make.

I wouldn't recommend a certification test, but a certification course could be useful to get started.

So I'll first start by saying gogo is right about the demo reel. In the real world demo reel will get you the job. But it is my opinion that a certification will ALWAYS benifit you in some way. Whether it helps you get a job or just helps you learn more about something. It will always be +1 point on your resume as well, so DO take the course if you are interested.

On another note. Its a bit concerning that your taking the test tomorrow, have used the software for more than 10 years and have listed a lot of basic stuff that you don't have an understanding of.

"Compositing - Demonstrate how to composite multiple layers together" I have never done this in Max, I use After Effects for this. Any suggestions on how to do this in Max

A: Layers button is on the top shelf - looks like layers of paper use it to configure your render layers for compositing. You'll want to spend some time here. Layers are also some times refered to as passes which is TOTALLY different. This is more like the rendering passes further down.

"Animation - Change Interpolation Methods" I assume this means IK vs FK? If not, what is it then?

A: Interpolation methods change the animation curve(time and speed) between keys. See curve editor

"Modeling - Differentiate Workflow" I am guessing this is in reference to poly modeling, edge modeling, NURBS, etc.

A: Yes and the way you create new edges, remove poles and types of proper sub object flows for certain object types - I.E. Edge loops.

"Rendering - Identify Pas Types" Say What? Like AO pass, specular pass, etc?

A: Yes

"Rigging/Setup - Identify Controller Usage" I will need to know more before I even look this one up...

A: This will be the various types of constraints and motion controllers used when rigging mechanical's and organic's

Good Luck on your test tomorrow! I hope you do well and I'm sure once you see the material you will feel much more confident and will do well.

Actually, the first item is the only one that I am really unfamiliar with, the rest are just to verify my suspicions. As far as the reasoning behind the test, it is just to differentiate myself from others that do the same thing I do. I will also be able to use the Autodesk logo. When I pass, I will be the only certified professional in the state of Arizona for the version I am testing.

Won't know until tomorrow. It is still Thursday here right now.

I will let you all know when I find out. Fingers crossed...

At least I will know what to expect if I go for other tests in the future.

Passed the test this morning, but it was NOT what I was expecting. For some reason I expected to see the Max interface and actually do specific things like interact with the menus. What I saw was multiple choice questions and answers. I knew how to implement each and every item presented to me, but I did not always remember the exact name of the modifier, tool, or constraint.

All in all, not a bad experience. Only took me 10 minutes to finish and another 10 to re-check my answers.

Now I am just waiting to get an email or letter. Apparently Autodesk sends the items out now instead of having the testing center issue certificates.
I think I might go back for the Professional level in a few months. Right now only the Associate level has been finished.

Congrats on passing. Sounds like quite an odd experience.
