i'll be the first to say that any direct communication from autodesk isn't going to be considered spam...

isn't ruby on everything?

osX is just not meant for cg work. Linux on the other hand... (aka centOS)

actually as we've deviated onto soft & kelly's in the room - I went to install softimage 2013 eval for linux but couldn't find it. could only find the windoze version.

is it around somewhere ? if I'm blind plz point me at it. thanks in advance.

This is one of the things that drives me crazy about Autodesk having bought Softimage, the Linux trial is no longer there, nor is there a linux version of the mod tool. I know you can install a trial version of it on Linux if you have the installer, but it's not available on the site, maybe you can email Autodesk support.

Bolts it was on the front page for forever:http://maxforums.org/threads/3dsmax_linux_running_wine/0001.aspx

If you're gonna talk Linux like you know something, why not bring up a distro that has better desktop support standards like Debian and it's variants.

CentOS and most redhat variants are great for web servers, and Debian and it's variants are great for desktop OSes, or when you need services that are more current and up to date as debian packages are more recent stable versions, where as RedHat based distros use older stable versions (unless you use fedora which unstable is fuck).

speaking of fedora - from the autodesk support page it looks like fedora is the version they currently aim at for compatibility. that to me is weird. why not ubuntu ?

fedora is a bit open source nerdy - nothing non free included so you have to go hunting around to even get flash plugins runnning. even then when I got it, it was buggy so gave up on fedora & went back to mint (which is ubuntu under the hood).

sure you can probably mess about & get it all working but artists have even less patience with this stuff than I do, they want something that 'just works'. ubuntu gives you that, & mint gives you that better with a cleaner easier to use interface.

@autodesk - please target ubuntu as your primary compatibility interface for linux versions.

obviously support for other distros is great as it's always good to have options but a solid default helps drive adoption. (here we go again).

W.T.F.

don't make me switch to C4D.

Lol at Linux nerd calling specific distros "nerdy".

This is one thing I don't like about "linux". It's not all the same thing. Some things will only run on specific distros.

tough. that's how it is. same concept as needing the right plugin for the right version of max.

there is compatibility by pulling a distro from standard releases such as debian or further up the q/a chain, ubuntu & they have a fairly nice versioning system so most stuff 'just works' but software is what it is.

if x & y want to talk to each other they need to have a well defined interface to communicate over.
