augh! uvw mapping!
show user profile  parkerfamily
how do i do this at all? i've failed to find a tutorial i can follow. i tried putting the uvw map modifier on (not uvw unwrap) and got the uvw placed how i wanted, but for that particular mod i don't know how to put it in at all. i'm trying to unwrap a cartoony mushroom, since the bottom of a mushroom converges on a center point, and i don't know how to do that with materials.
i have a picture of my mushroom here.
it's just a sphere, that i detached half of, flipped it over, flattened them to my liking and bridged together again, fixing all the normals afterwards, and then i extruded the innermost edge loops on the bottom, and chamfered all my bad edges around it. finally i just put meshsmooth on it. theres my mushroom. but the bottoms of mushrooms have those ridges that converge on the center, and i'm planning on uvw mapping the whole thing because of that. my map for it is a circle with my top texture, a donut shape for the ridges, and a rectangle with the stem texture.

edit: also, that's an old picture, i have the poor topology on the bottom fixed now.

edit2: actually i've figured out pretty well how to do it now. my only problem is, these "seam" things are in what seem to be random places. theres one in the middle of the bottom side of the mushroom, and it looks like somebody punched a hole in my texture then did a bad job fixing it. and i'll try mapping unsmoother.

You should unwrap the unsmoothed model.
Try with pelt mapping if your version of max got it (forgot which version introduced it)

oh wow lol, unsmoothed does help a lot.
i got rid of the seams there now. last question and i'll have it done, i just have a rectangle with the texture i want for the stem, is there a way to flatten out those faces?

Without knowing how your unsmoothed model looks like, what is your texture and where exactly you want it I have no idea what to tell you

it's ok i actually figured it out. and i didn't need to flatten them out. just dragged all of them onto the rectangle and it worked, since the rectangle was just the same as a normal texture would have been, it didn't matter. i've learned how to at least sorta do uvw mapping! yay!
