Attaching weapons to a biped?

I am making a scene from 300 i have made my weapons etc i was just wondering the best way to attach a sword to my biped? do you make props and attach the weapon to the prop? or is there an easier way....

link the weapon to a dummy where it'll be held then link the dummy to the hand on the biped
depending on which verison of max you're using there are 'weapon holder' type things that act as extra bones- dunno what they're called... but they're in the area the structure of the biped is defined in
course you could just attach the sword(?) to the main mesh in place and rigid bind it to the hand bone- that's if it's not going to be moving from or in the hand
