Arg! A Pirate Prop

Hey guys. Most of my work has been in the broadcast industry. Being in Seattle, I'm looking to expand into game art as well. This piece was done to work out a complete texturing pipeline using high poly geometry sculpted in zBrush. I'm pretty happy with it overall, but there's a few things I wan't to add/refine.

The concept is by:

I welcome any C & C even though this is posted in Finished Art.

Nice look overall, could use some harsh AO baked into the textures and a bit more contrasted wood texture

I love it, the design is very dynamic., would be interested to see how stabbys suggestion looks, but I like the finish.

Good work. It's got a tonne of character. Like your painting skills. If I were to criticise... the ropes around the main frame are too low poly and break the illusion, and maybe the metal detail at the base is too high poly?

Fucking awesome work mate. Really nice texturing, style and feel to the model. Only crit (if you can call it that) would be to repeat what Herfst said about the rope being a little too low poly. But, as a prop or scenery asset, it's really good.

Yeah cracking job mate. A single chamfer on the rope corners will improve it greatly without much increase in polys.

could save space in your normal & diffuse maps by repeat tiling one rope section. depends on the application as to whether it's worth the effort.

Thanks for the comments fellas.

@Stabby: I was able to get decent AO baked out for the individual pieces, but need to sort out how to get a good AO over the whole asset. I'll revisit the wood grain and try get some high contrast detail that better matches the concept.

@Faithcake: Thanks. I owe a lot to the original concept artist as far as the design goes.

@herfst1: Thanks. Agreed on the ropes. I'll admit that I didn't really work to a specific poly count. It started pretty low, but then I said f*ck it just to make it look good which resulted in some discrepancies in poly density. I should be able to punch up the silhouette/rounding on the ropes fairly easily.

@LionDebt: Thanks a lot. Ditto on the ropes.

@Mrgrotey: Thanks, that means a lot coming from you. Yes. Ropes!

@AS: If I was going to rebuild this asset, more efficient UV packing would be at the top of the list. The rope along the left of the texture is tiled (along the draped ropes). Could have pushed it further for sure.

Cheers guys.

Looks very nice other than the rope point mentioned above.

I made some revisions based on all of your feedback. I think it's looking a bit better, but the more I look at it, the more I want to change, so I think I leave it alone for now.

I'd like to hear any final C&C. I may make some minor texture tweaks if needed. Otherwise I'll come back to it as I build out a larger scene for the prop.

Cheers guys,

Big improvement to the ropes! Id say the AO went a little OTT for my liking. Somewhere in between the two if you ask me,.
