Are alphas killing my Max?
show user profile  herfst1
I've got a very simple scene with about 28,000 poly's, 4 lights one cat rig and one camera. And yet max is crashing all the time (between 30 seconds to 3 minutes depending on what I try). I systematically hid each of the layers and think that it's my hair layer (with alphas) that's probably to blame.

From what I understand about alphas "some" programs don't like them intersecting. So I hid all the alphas that were potentially intersecting with each other and the program still crashed. Now I'm thinking that the alphas shouldn't intersect with the mesh either. Is that so?

Alternately, is there potentially a problem with the way I made alphas? I made the hair texture in PS, duplicated it and made an inverse b&w as a new layer. Should I have just placed it as a new channel and saved the texture out as a png? Also, I placed the alpha texture in the opacity map slot of a standard texture and it gives a general ghosting to the entire texture (even though I have solid white areas in my alpha texture).

Merge objects from your scene to a fresh one.
If it doesn't help do it again but now merge only objects you a sure of.

By doing this you at least will know where the problem is.

Okay, thanks. Will try that and see how I go.

Yeah, I'm still confused. I slowly imported the parts, making sure everything was working. Didn't import the lights (and don't have any in my scene at the moment). Then it crashed. So I deleted the alpha map for the hair, switched the composite material for the armor to standard, switched the skin material from SSS to standard and it seemed to work... then it crashed.

I checked my hard-disk space, all good, got around 200 gigs to play with. Scanned my computer, no bugs. Checked defragmenting, 0% defragmented. My ram is fine. Not a clue what to check next.

Maybe it's because of my texture map size? The body and the armor textures are 4096x4096, and the smaller items like hair and eyes are 512x512 and 256x256 respectively. I haven't even textured the background.

Maybe it's CAT playing up? Would be strange, since I haven't tweaked it at all (haven't even added fingers or toes).

don't know anything about this specific issue but as a general point, check you've installed all available service packs/hotfixes for the version of max you're using. if it still crashes, report to autodesk with an example file & method of reproducing if a recent version (2011/2012 are probably the only versions likely to be patched).

could be running out of memory. try smaller maps & see if that fixes it.

In case anyone else had this...

Found the error/problem. I had created a grill (drainage cover with parallel slats) that was fairly high poly, also gave it a shell. I deleted it and Max seems to be fine again. Should have guessed as the last time Max chucked a shit was when a made a hexagon grill (with a shell) for a car. Guess my laptop isn't up to scratch.

Got it. So geometry was a problem. Maybe i have the same reason for my crashes.
