Hi all,
I've just had a little play with architectural materials in 2010 as I know they render better in the viewport than standard materials. I dropped down a cube & a directional light, applied a diffuse texture & a normal map. I couldn't get the normal map to render in the viewport but a render shows it was correctly applied.
Did I miss something ? Can arch. materials render normal maps into the viewport ?

Havent got 2010 but I do have 2009 and to get the normal map to show in the viewport you have to hold down the blue and white checker button in the material editor and change it ot a PINK and white box. (and make sure its pressed down)

You mean icon that has the tooltip "Show Standard Map in Viewport" ?
It isnt' blue & white in 2010 cause they changed the ui to dark grey wat is more cool.
It only seems to toggle on & off, no third state.
I managed to get it to render the normal map as diffuse (replacing the regular diffuse) but not to affect the lighting.
Can anyone on 2010 tell me how to do this ?

So I installed 2009 and as expected there is no pink box thing.
Disinforming is not good moderation.
Thanks.
Apologies if it actually does exist.

It exists on my copy anyway...
That's what I understand to be the architectural material (arch and design) If you were referring to something else then I apologise.
Misinforming, if indeed I have done that, which I don't think I have, has absolutely nothing to do with moderating as far as I know.
Chips should be put in the mouth, not on the shoulder.

There is no chip - just thought this might have been grote humour.
From the material editor then only option I can see is "Architectural".
Where's "Arch & Design" ? Is that only on max design or is it on the regular version too ?
As stated above, apologies if I've got the wrong end of the stick on this one.
Googling ...

I have regular max 2009, cant speak for design, I believe they are both one and the same.
The arch-design material is a mental ray material, this may be the difference
[edit] ahhh architectural, thats a standard max material, never really seen that before, yeah that doesnt have the pink box *shrugs*

Got "arch & design" .. had to enable mental ray rendering before it shows up (never tried this before).
New toys ...
Cheers, Grotes & apologies for earlier.
