Arch & Design Material Question (Glossy Samples Issue)
show user profile  CAD Monkey
Hi Guys,

I hope someone might be able to help me:

I am working on an interior at the moment and usully to create my materials, I start with a Matte Arch and Design template and then tweak levels etc. along with adding maps. Ordinarily if I want to create a satin type effect I would immediately start with reflectivity around 0.4 and glossiness at around 0.25 (as a kick off). Usually at this point I need to increase the glossy samples from 8 to around 12-16 to sort things out, but at the moment if I go any higher than 8 (8 is not good enough) it gets worse!!

I've never had this before, but my materials are looking completely shite and I can't seem to do anything about it. I've tried taking glossy samples down to 1 and this is better but gives a hugely shiny material which I don't want...

Can anyone help please? I'm on Max 2013 Design if that helps.

Cheers,

CAD Monkey

Is your undersampling killing it? What are your image samples per pixel settings?

I often have to go up to 32 samples in the material to get good final results.

Also, check your precision settings in the rendered window controls. You might have them globally set to be using less than 1.0x, which would make things not work.

What is it that's being reflected? Is it an exterior daylight for instance? If so, the massively over bright sky causes more artifacts in the reflections. Could you copy your MR sky into your material editor and turn down its brightness? Just a thought. Let us know a bit more about the scene if something along those lines doesn't work

Cheers Nik!

That sorted it - glossy reflection precision in the rendered frame window!!

I owe you one!
