Applying materials to tiles

I used to know how to do this but its been so long ive forgotten.

So ive modelled a roof which is one large editable poly but made up of loads of different elements for the individual tiles.

Whats the easiest way to texture them so you get a slight difference in each tile without having to change them all manually?

Im sure there was a material or a script or something where you could basically assign material ids at random or something similar.
