Apply different materials to different sides of an object
Could somebody please help me with a question I have, or point me in the direction of a tutorial which might help me.
I have a box which I am trying to apply different materials to. For example, I want to apply a red material to everything apart from the top face; I want to apply a green material to the top face.
Is it possible to just apply materials to faces rather than objects, or should I create a plane and place it on top of the top face?

apply the red material to the object, then select the top face and drag the material sphere you want onto the face in the view port and it will assign it only to that face
