Anyone know how to achieve this look?

Doesn't take long to fade into obscurity in here eh? Anyways, I want to show my pathetic attempt, and perhaps then I can get a few pointers:

mrgrotey: lol, I forgot you were from a different place ... I'm from Canada, and just got up over here, and you're going out ;) must be nice, I'd go out tonight too, but my bank apparently took out around $50 in fees and that was the last of my money for now ... so it'll be a rather slow weekend for me :(

that would be really cool if you did the progress thing ... i am so lost on this. a year back i made a dr. octopus model from spiderman, and it was pretty good ... but a model like this is literally downgrading so much it's almost cartoonish, so it seems most of the anatomy rules are thrown out the window. anyways, post it here if you can, and if you want you can e-mail it to me ... either way.

my e-mail is:

d-y-l-a-n_b-a-b-y-@-h-o-t-m-a-i-l.com

just remove the "-" symbols, the underscore stays there.

thanks again.

Right i cant believe i made a tut for this model but here goes hehe...

(oh and there is going to be a LOT wrong with this model to experienced low poly modellers but it'll get you where you want :) i personally havent done any low poly before, if i did i spose this may have been done differently

[edit] heres the max7 file if you want it http://athena.divshare.com/files/2007/03/03/182462/Witch.max

1. I started with the lowest part of the blue dress...thing and jsut made a simple box then pulled the vertices around a little to suit.

2. The as the legs seem to be triangular in shape i cut a couple of triangle inot the bottom face of the box, keep ing a gap betweenthem woith another edge.

3. Then extruded the new faces and tapered them a little

4. next i took the top face and used bevel to extrude it a couple of times making sure it looked ok buy pulling the b=verts around again. Also i did two diagonal cuts to make way for the neck whch also seems triangular. the central vertex was pulled back a little inot the body also.

5. bevel out the top face twice to make the neck and start of jaw line (if you can call it that)

6. clearly you dont want a triangular head so you need to extrude the back face of the top section and pull the vertices in sideways to make the overall shape rounder. at this stage i also chanfer the front vertex so the chin would be squarer (weld the new lower vertex on the chin to the one boew to make it a bit neater)

7. then i selected the two top faces and bevelled them in to rough out the head.

8. select the two vertices around the eye area and chamfer them, then a pulled awayt the two outside vertices to matcht he original a bit more.

9. here i divided the faces in the middle of the head into to by cutting, and then cut in the outline of the nose and chamfered the mouth edge

10. next extrude the nose polygon and then collapse it to make a point. also i inset the eyes for the pupils. an i cut in a couple of lines for the hair line.

11. select the faces to extrude for the hair and....well...extrude them :)

12. after pulling them about a little and extruding an collapsing a poly for the pointy bit at the front i came to this... (make space for the hat here by creating a relatively flat surface on the top of her head)

13. select the top polys for the hat and bevel them outwards with very little height to form the hat brim.

14. bevel the top polys again and collapse the last one to finish off the hat

15. for the arms i just chamfered one edge on each side then pulled the lower vertex down a touch to make it a little neater

16. extrude the newly created poly

17. extrude the lower face a couple of times to make the arms

18. thats the body done, onto the feet, createa a box and targete weld the front vertsa dn collapse the rear verts as shown, then move the outside front vert to create the angle for the toes

19. for the hand createa box, connec the top and bottom front edges, draw in towards the middle and collapse the front sideverts to make a point and a very odd looking hand

20. for the broom head make a box and scale down the top face,

21. bevel that top face outwards for the rest of the main shape and then connect top edges at the top (shown in green)

22. pull up that new edge for the point of the broom head

23. the handle is a 3 sided cylinder and then you're done! just add standard materials with the default grey changed to what ever fits.

there you go your very own shitty model!

i can make any thing crap you know :)

hope this helps

LMAO oh man that is awesome. Thanks so much for making this. I know it was kinda weird but I really love the old look of those models, I used to get a laugh everytime I played the games. You also showed me some really good tools that I never really use that would have made my modeling alot easier. I have yet to see a tutorial use chamfer and bevel that extensively when it comes to low-poly modeling. That's usually something I would've taken the harder road for ... I would have made the hat and eyes and hair seperate, whereas you made it a simple mesh and it's alot more effective.

Anyways, thanks alot once again, I didn't think you'd go into that much detail but you did and that's awesome. It's like a mini-crap model tutorial lol ;)

Thanks,

Hobbes

Grotey, you deserve some sort of prize for the amount of effort you put in around here.
