| Anyone know how to achieve this look? |

I was wondering if anyone knows how to get a similar look to the old games back in the 90's. This is what I'm aiming at:

Thanks to anyone that can help. Sorry if the pics are too big, I can resize them if I have to.

boxy, un-smoothed geometry for the models (basic poly modeling), lo res maps for the backs, default lighting, no materials (for the models), again very simple and boxy props. No big deal.
Cheers,

It's just that I actually find it harder to achieve a look like that since it's so old. Everything now is textured like crazy and HDRI and everything else ... I just don't get how to get the thing lit like this. It's almost as if it's at 100% self-illum or something.

lmfao! grotey, how did you do that? That took virtually no time for you to make ... can you gives me a few tips on how you made it? Heck, even send it over if you can that's really cool.

to make the model you need to learn how to poly model very very badly :P, i really would have uploaded the model for you but i got rid of it as it was kind of a joke thing and didnt think anyne would ask that :D
as a lot of modelling techniques begin, start with a box, cut in some lines where you want legs, arms etc then extrude the faces, and adjust the edges to suit along the way. pretty darn basic stuff there,
if you havent done it yet (and i reckon you havent - no offense or anything) try the joan of arc tutorial its world reknowned for being one of the very best tutorials available as it teaches you so many different things for basic poly modelling. its certain to improve your abilities.

I know how to do most of that stuff, it's not that modeling is really new to me. It's more of getting something that simple made really ... you literally made that in like 5 minutes. I'm guessing you did the regular box, and then extruding certain bits and stuff, but I mean features like the face that quickly or even the feet seem like triangles ... did you just do all the welding and everything that quickly or use seperate pieces? It seems alot of these models back then weren't really square-like, but more triangle-looking.
Basically I'm just wondering how you initially started, perhaps a box? My main problem is that when I model I end up hacking the thing up just so I can extrude a couple of legs, but I'm sure yu did a more proper and more efficient way of doing it.
I know these models are pretty rough and basic and horrible done, but there's a certain minimilistic style to them, and they are easier to churn out so I wanted to find out if anyone has a few tips on getting something that horrible looking basically lol.

If you have trouble modeling crap, model a nice, higher poly model and apply the Optimize modifier until it's all raw and faceted.

click: give it a try, but mr. grotey had it pretty much exact. i just wanna know if he started with the toe or whatever or a box for the body. from the pics above i'd start with a box on the body, but i'd end up making 20 cuts just so i can extrude some decent legs :P
paradox: tried that, but it didn't come close. there must be a practical way of doing it really crappy like the above pics.
