Anyone into cg? (hlsl)... I'm looking for books
show user profile  digs
just wondering if anyone has any experience with cg and can recommend some books that you found useful... I'm currently writing shaders for unity, but I want to expand that knowledge into max/maya - sky is the limit i guess

I prefer learning through books, so if anyone can recommend any excellent ones that'd b awesome

Computer Graphics?

I've heard there are forums for that, but I've never visited any.

To be honest, any books you can buy are out of date before they are published.

Is there something specific you need to learn about because CG covers a lof of very different skill sets.

Chunky or curvy?

I'm all for curves, but chunks aren't my thing.

i WAS talking about curvey girls.... but as for the programming language, I'm mostly interested in visual effects... right now I'm concentrating on writing shader programs, since it's seeming to be pretty entry level

-edit- I'm mostly interested in visual effects - i know this is broad, but I'm not trying to master cg by next monday... I expect it will take at least a full week :/ I'm really just wanting to make bad ass looking shaders / camera effects / ect - stuff for games

-edit edit- long term goal - stuff for movies

As soon as I've the time, I'm planning on working through Graphics Shaders: Theory and Practice, which was recommended by a friend. According to him, it's based on GLSL (which suits me better than HLSL), deals a lot with the theory and maths (what I'm looking for) and has plenty of exercises.

If you go for it, I'd appreciate a short review :)
(I won't be working on it before a month or two)

Still confused as to the point of this thread.

Where are all the curvy girls?

afaik the differences between hlsl and glsl are like the differences between c and c#? even tho they all are c based? I wonder in what cases you would need to use glsl istead of hlsl and vise versa?

I think I remember hearing that glsl is more geared toward max, for example? I have no idea, but am very interested!

Choraphormed Girls: He Licks, She Lies.

Don't have any books, but I provided a web address.

P.S. Surprised you're into it too! We should start a fap club.

GLSL is for OpenGL, HLSL is for Direct3D.

> I wonder in what cases you would need to use glsl istead of hlsl and vise versa?
The 1st works withh direct3D, the 2nd with opencl. So the question is more about which api you'd use, whcih depends on your target platform(s) (and also your dev platform, since poor independent devs can rarely afford different platforms).
For example, if I wanted to write shaders for modo, I'd go the opengl/glsl route, since support for opengl 2.0 is part of their requirements.

edit: too slow again! (don't you people ever sleep?)

To be fair, I was just checking there was such a thing as chloroform gas and "chloroform girls" was the top search; I HAD to check it out. Was too perfect not to post.
