Any easy way to model this?

I am modeling this basket "
I tried 2 methods
Created cylinder in that shape and detached edges(create shape from spline) then tried spacing tool on each edge but the rectangles/squares don't get on the spline well, i meant they goes like this
i know it is possible with spacing tool :D
And second method rotated squares along cylinder, attached and then taper.
So what i wanna know if there would be any script which can place the different size squares randomly on the lines. My pattern is same and repeating while the ref image have random pattern. Is there any simple way doing this thing rather than placing squares manually?

by the time you find an automated way to do this; you'll have modeled it several times by placing the squares on a bowl stand-in and use scatter to get them to the surface; then move them around till they connect properly.

[edit] having said that, displacement maps will work like a dream here.

Populate Panels will get you close, not sure about the randomization of scale and rotation...scatter approach may be more configurable.

Why not spherize a cube, edit poly, detach all polys then generate splines from the poly borders. Then just give them rounded corners and a thickness and delete a few and scale a few.

Fx nd Bolteon i am gonna use scatter also which i have never used :P Btw where the Populate panel is in 3ds max? :-/

What i know about displace modifier/map is for rocks etc.
:D Sometimes a very common method does not get in my mind.
Need to scale and rotate few and that's all

@ Strat, It's effing simple, just planar unwrap half a sphere, and save out the uv's. Then use photoshop to paint in some vector-rounded white squares on a black background, and use vraydisplacementmod with a water level of 0.001 or so and you're there.

Only thing is... my test results were a bit meh. The borders weren't crisp enough for my liking even after cranking the subdivs to 512 (the max) and using a 4k texture with smartobject layers.

Guess I'll have to watch that vray tutorial again and see what I'm missing.

darn but i am doing it for Real time viz :P so no displacement method would work. But it does make a sense for something like this in Vray :)

Make a tapered cylinder with even mesh disribution & populate it with a rectangle shape with rounded corners.
Google populate panels.
On my phone....typing is a beeyatch.
