Animation - playback

Hey all,

I am trying to do a small animation and wanted to see what it would look like before rendering but I see that the playback in the viewport is not smooth, jumps about every 20 frames. Is there a reason for that? On my settings I have it as PAL, 25fps, active viewport and real-time .......

Good question,
I have this every time I use a poser character,
I put it down to high poly content, and or bones/skin but I never did get an official reason, so Ill be following this thread closely.

also, can anyone tell me what settings (and where to change them) do I use to output my animation into .mov files ...........

I don't know but I have a Z800 with 2 Xeon's and 12GB of RAM and I still get skips on playback in the viewport. Best bet is to do a hardware render.

Guys,

Nowhere is it written that MAX should be able to play an animation in realtime from the viewport.

That is what "Make Preview" is for.......................

anything with mesh animation - skinning, morphs, etc. requires a (slow) hardware geometry update in every frame where the geometry changes. max isn't currently optimized to do this without these slow updates like a game engine would do for example.

Better graphics card = better viewport speed.

Grotey?.......With epic respect,....isnt that only half true?

We arent talking viewport manipulation here....we are talking playback....which means CPU computation of everything happening in the scene, tranforms, the modifier stack...etc...etc.
