Animating tendrils

Hi All,
Im wanting model up some little osteblasts (microscopic things that build bone) but i want to animate the tendrils growing out very much like this animation at around 2min 03secs.
What would be the best way to do this?

Starting with a sphear i was just going extrude out various polys to create the final shape i need but really not sure how i can then animate from the smooth sphear to the shear with loads of tendrils?

You could
Select a poly
Inset 6 or so times
Copy and pull the tentacle out
Add a morpher to your original sphere and use the tentacle one as target
Add a mesh select mod - select the tentacle
Add a ripple mod and tweak away

This is the result

thanks, nice idea.
I was trying it by using the animate on and edit poly modifier
Morpher might be a better solution though if i can get a start and end model constructed.
Thought there might be a maxscript for this sort of thing but not been able to find anything.

For any one interested and future refs... I found this which looks like it may make life easier(not tried it yet)
