animating a spinning drum with an access door
So i am working on a project. I can not post images right now, so i will try to explain what i need as best i can.
There is a drum (like a steel barrel) laying on its side in a cradle that is the same shape as the drum. the drum will rotate in the cradle and an access door on the side of the drum will open when the drum gets to a certain point in the cradle and will close after it passes the cradle. It will have a roller that will manually do it, but i'm not sure how to animate this in max. it works in the real world, but i need to mock it up in max first. any thoughts or tutorial suggestions would be appreciated.

Not sure if I understand. Picture of the real life object maybe?
Congrats, you found my signature.

i don't have a picture to post yet. But to add some details....
it will be a steel drum that spins on rollers inside a larger drum that is cut in half. the full drum will have a trap door on the side that will open with a manual lever. basically it is a spring loaded door that is manually opened when the lever hits the half drum and spring closed when it clears the half drum. i just don't know how i would animate something like that.

All these explanations aren't gonna help us. If you can find an image online of what you're trying to make, then drag/drop into a www.imagetitan.com upload box, copy that image info from there to here, you'll likely get lots more help.
