animate thread spun on tube

Any ideas on the best way to rig and animate something like the process you can see in this video? ( 0:22-->0:32) http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=V2ZJDqPfiwc

Unless you need an extreme close-up, you could texture a cylinder and animate the offset of some procedural material (like a stretched noise) for the film.

I might try to model and texture the large roll well. Then animate a texture moving along a plane that stretches from the armature to the back side of the roll. it doesn't appear to move much other than side to side and there is so much film already added to the large roll the pattern on the roll from previous applications does not change noticeably during operation(in that video)

ccambell ftw

It IS right....if it LOOKS right. Sometimes complex things can be accomplished quite easily.

Good inputs! I'll try them out to see If it works.
But have my doubts so i'll try to specify some more here:
Its a little different from the video. The big pipe is not rotating, only moving in its length direction. Around the radius of the pipe is a wheel with several yarns of thread. This wheel is then spinning around the big pipe laying out the threads in 45dgr angle along the pipe.
I'm going to move the camera around and close up on this machine, so i need a bit of detail.
So the best would be If i could animate a spline around a cylinder.

I'm picturing maybe maxscript or some kind of rigging is needed here.

I might be slow be... didn't ccampbell say the same thing I did, only with more words?

@Wingman: I have difficulties picturing what you said in your last post.

I see. I think I have an idea to do it with actual geometry. Simple setup (if it works).
If it can wait until tomorrow...

This is great stuff Garp!
I'll try to reproduce it tomorrow.
I need these fibers to appear from a container (that appears to have a yarn inside), but i guess i'll find a solution to that.
you seem to have cracked the hardest part. Thanks! :)
