How do I animate simple moving dots?

I'm working on a project where I need to animate some dots exactly the same way as the attached youtube video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkqVYGcrim8

Would anybody be able to give me some quick tips on how to do this?

I'm new to 3ds max so I really appreciate any help from the experts. :)

make an opacity map that is a circle and you can get something like this

Alternative: make a plane and edit it, apply a material with a gradient ramp set to radial in the opacity slot, use tile and offset settings and the gradient's flags to adjust size and spacing of the dots, animate the offset.

Wow guys, thanks for taking the time to create those videos for me... they were really helpful.

What I ended up doing was using a few particle flow systems to create the lines of spheres and then used deflectors to bounce them.
