animate self illumination in 2012?

On frame 0 I set the A+D self illum slider to 0, then on frame 90 I set it to 10 (unitless) ((autokey))... If I scrub through the animation the material fades from off to on during the 90 frames in the viewport, and the units update in the material editor, but if I render a frame it appears to be off... if i then delete both of my keyframes and re-render the same frame, it appears to be self illuminated. Any ideas on whats going on?
