Animate based on video
show user profile  LOL500
So there is this dance video on the internet and I want to animate my character to dance like the dancers in the video. Is there some technique to do this or is it just by eye?

Chuck the vid in a program that lets you scroll through frame by frame.

Either keyframe the whole thing or do straight ahead approach.

I did a dance vid once (badly), one tip, key in the beats so that you can make sure your moves hit on the beat.

So that means fire up virtualdub and keyframe what I see.
How do you key in the beats?

Play the music, play your animation and press "k" in time to the kick drum.

[edit] forgot to mention, you need an object selected to make the key frames. I normally make a simple box and put it out the way, I call it a beat box.

Have you tried one of the many markerless mocap apps out there ? most of them can grab from a video source.

There is SO much subtlety and organic timing in dance......prepare yourself for some MAJOR work if you think you will just eyeball and keyframe.

Well yeah, that's what I think, that's why I'm asking round here and no, I'm not aware of any mocap stuff.

Dr Jim's right, sheesh this ain't easy, I've got some tribal/ african drummer dance loops to do and it's taking forever.
I was wrong about the mocap from video stuff, I thought it had progressed further than it actually has, this was the closest I could find but afaik never released.

Gangam style ? no, I think LOL500 was asking in general.

I'm tying to do loops of these guys..

The guy second from left has approached me about a website, they want it 3d interactive, ie: click on drum will trigger a dance drum loop of drummers.

I thought I'd make some loops to show him how it will look in a couple of draft animations...4 hours in an I'm realizing this is going to take a while. :(

split it up to key points.

Make a linear key frames at the best points.
Start tweening and overlapping from there

here is a reel from Ice age showing the evolution one of their dance scenes http://vimeo.com/43769992

That's a helpful link chillywilson thanks, surely that's not 32 FULL days work ? anyway ...makes me feel slightly better it took me 4 hours to get this little loop going, go on.. rip it apart :P

The next one shouldn't take so long and I'll have a little more patience with it, thank god it doesn't need to be Ice Age standards :)
