my Android keyboard [ img / crits ]

Hi guys,
Haven't been here for a while. :) Yet now wanted to show you my latest achievement - a keyboard for an Android device.

Here's a screenshot:

And the website http://www.totalkeyboard.com/

For those, who have an android device - right now you can download it for free from the link on the website. 5 star rating would be appreciated! ;)

Thanks!

Installed and reviewed (gave it five stars).

However, I immediately uninstalled it. Here's my experience:

1) Had to go back to your website, as the Android market page doesn't give the instructions for enabling it.

2) Scary message about it might be stealing credit card information is off-putting (but I'm sure it's some system thing, not your doing)

3) It defaults to making a loud tick noise, which I couldn't find a way to switch off. Because I'm in an office, I couldn't use this.

4) You seem to need to use the PC to change the settings. To me, this is a huge disadvantage.

The keyboard itself looks and feels good. It's a shame I couldn't make more use of it. I'll try it again if there are updates. Well done on making a great Android app.

what's wrong with the default keyboard? I like it just fine on my HTC Desire.

Thanks Nick!

1. I'll add the instructions to the market page.

2. This is a default Android warning, it will appear when you install any custom keyboard, not just mine. :)

3. I'll add an option for disabling the sound. Meanwhile you can just turn the media volume off or, from a pc, delete the hit.wav file.

4. I believe it would be rather difficult for a user to combine a new keyboard layout on an android device only. After all I guess it's not something that the user would be doing all the time. :) Also on the PC you can draw your own button, background, etc. you certainly couldn't do it on the phone alone. :)

Thanks again!

The HTC keyboard is more or less ok, yet my Nexus keyboard does seem pretty ugly. At least to me. Also it's impossible to customize it. :)

The customizable aspect is one I that will make me give this another go when I'm connected to a PC. I like that. I don't like the layout of my current keyboard (Galaxy S-II).

Great. Let me know if you'll have any questions about customizing it.

A customizable keyboard is a good idea. I doubt it will catch on until you can customize via drag-n-drop though.
Personally I use one called "Scandinavian Keyboard" for the æ ø å keys.
or 8Pen for the giggles.

Terribly boring signature.

Why don't you add an option for enabling the sound? I never understood pad sounds. It's not like you can miss the whole keyboard so the sound is telling you it's ok, you can only miss a certain key, making the sound useless.

I guess you're right... I'll make a drag-n-drop interface when I have time.
