It's mainly about virtualizing it on OSX/Linux, rather than porting it. There are a few options for native versions, but it seems like the typical AD half-arsed "would it impress you if we gave you a 3DSMAX EMULATOR ON LINUX??"
No, no it would not. How about you make that piece of shit good for once?
No, nope, that's not in their repertoire.

the question where you can spend $100 on different options i have put $100 on making max better on its current platform :)

Also more OSX people (who probably don't even do 3d) will vote on this than 'Linux users' who use linux at work and go home and try not to think of Autodesk or the OS ever again because from an artist's standpoint nobody wants to be using linux, but from an IT standpoint it is a great idea. The idea of putting a poll on "the area" has been flawed from the start, and by doing so, you're immediately making sure anyone who is remotely competent or experienced at their job isn't going to ever see some shitty Area blog post. (no offense of course, word gets around and it does reach some people, however...) The Area is simply the biggest community abomination ever and I'm glad I don't have to even remotely rely on it any more.

I did this too :) I'm pretty sure they stopped listening to customer feedback in 2004 though? Expect to see an OSX port in a few years, I guess.

I'd rather they ported XSI to OSX, seeing as how there is already a Linux port. I'd hate to see any kind of Max port. It can barely function on windows, let alone a half assed move to another platform.

Fix the feking copy protection & it'll work on Linux using Wine. Cinema4D does.
Porting to other platforms would help ensure the code base is robust as porting shows up issues so it's not just about running elsewhere it's the process you go through.
That said, 3dsmax + plugins are hardwired into windows, so it'll be a non-trivial port.
The bigger problem is that they're still asking questions like this. Blender is catching up fast. They need to merge the soft, maya & 3dsmax teams & create a single unified uber product in order to compete. I don't see any evidence they're doing this. Oh well, not my business & I'm not a shareholder.

Fix the fucking program before adding to or porting. Typical Autodesk, more worried about increasing sales than making a better product.

The thing that has always bloody mystified me is that the material editor hasnt changed since like R2. seriously, Im sick of running out of space and scrolling through materials to find what is what. Why cant it be infinite and folder based like C4D's. I found that brilliant!

Well, 2011 has a new material editor, which is actually pretty good, even if they have messed up the material choice bit.

Well, the results are in, and it looks like they are considering a Mac version now.

can't wait till they release max for household apparatus...
Imagine rendering on your microwave processor, now that would expand their users to even household wives and cleaning personel.
