I don't know how I feel about this... Not really good considering there isn't a lot of progress in development in AD products year to year.

Well, it's good for some, I guess. I really don't know.

Max development seems to have ground to a halt yet again, and iray and mentalray blog updates only cover Maya recently, especially Maya on the Mac. Max doesn't get a mention any more.

I'm sure Autodesk have a plan, I'm just not sure it involves Max for that much longer. The free beer next year attitude of max development is wearing thin.

I've stopped caring.

Well it takes away any pressure really from AD to develop further (or push for substantial development).. Just enough to get everyone up-to-date and subscribing and BAM... why should they develop further after that point? You are renting their software and will continue to do so.

(unless you move to a different provider).. Adobe is fine doing this, but adobe isn't charging 400 a month for software licenses (still 40 bucks is 40 bucks).

edit: I also don't know how much AD will be charge, but I do know they are charge 1470 USD for Maya a year which equates to 122 dollars per month (tac on the charge to rent monthly and not annually and you have around ~180-200 USD a month I suspect).

Every year they spend more time re-branding and dreaming up ways to get more money than improving products.

Yeah, they're acting like a bunch of pirates. I wish there was a way we could be pirates too...

If I were a pirate I would find an island and take refuge in one of their harbours (or bays). Hell, I'd take it over and rename it Pirate Harbour (or Bay).

^^^^ super witty.

That is a lot more than the current price of subscription isn't it? Apart from the fact that you can cancel it and not get charged a huge upgrade later when you resume it, bad deal.

Hold on that image says you can still buy it outright?

Yes you can. They are transitioning slowly towards killing off the perpetual license.

"will be removing the sale of perpetual software licenses in the next 12-24 months. "

I'm sure Autodesk read this forum.
The slide show is so inconsistent with the community needs, it's almost hilarious.
Shall we speak of

  • quadcap

  • smart auto remeshing

  • stop button when baking textures (vray does have it)

  • axis constrained cut

  • updated and readable maxscript reference

  • updated and readable sdk reference

  • modifiers not destrying topology when switching through different service packs

  • painting on the viewport with the correct gamma

  • integration of previews in windows explorer

  • radial simmetry

  • relation between quality/price and comparison to other products

  • impossibility to open newer files

  • customer service

  • precision mode like Blender

  • liquid simulation

I'm curious if this list is gonna grow faster than the "captured customers". Those words say it all.

I don't know. I'll see how these next few years go with Maya.

If it all goes well I'll stick with it, if not I am leaving AD and not coming back (in favor of Luxology or another company if AD doesn't buy them out.... almost said "Luxion" instead.. Dear God no).

Blender scares me.

I have an Autodesk guy at work who, I believe, checks this forum too. Might as well score bonus points: he's proof that the whole company isn't comprised of greedy bastards (he's an old-school peace-loving hippie persona). Makes me think it's like the music business, it used to be run by cool hippies and there were great albums being made, now it's run by accountants in suits and it's all about them shit, soulless singles.

That's the problem in a nutshell. No matter how dedicated the "current" max team is, it's at the whim of accountants and marketing people. I'm convinced the marketing budget is several orders of magnitude greater than the one for developing software.

They made a big song-and-dance earlier in the year about how Max was loved, and they were going to develop it, honest. What's become of that? Still the closed-door policy and ignoring of the customer view pages.

Meanwhile, Maya development is going ahead full-steam. Nvidia now delete questions on their blog about why they only talk about Maya development and have nothing to say about Max.
