I would've thought it would be faaaar quicker to do it in photoshop using a zdepth pass. atmospherics such as volume fog slow max down massively.

i was hoping to do it in a short animation, if it's very heavy i'll not bother but is it just an opaque material applied with a zdepth pass? is there a way of doing it internally?

Heya,

Check out the freeware ZTint plugin here: http://www.bytegeistsoftware.com/prod01_formcomplete.htm#Zt

I've used Ztint in the past, for some projects, very simple & easy to use, missing a bunch of options I'd love to have though. You may find though you get a bit more control with a z-depth pass and After Effects.
