Hi All,

I just thought I'd introduce myself to the forum and tell you a little bit of where I'm at with 3d max.

Well, you can call me Dave if you so which, but mostly I get "Cheese" from my handle. I've not been modelling long - say about 6-8weeks now on and off and thought it would be wise to get onto a community that I could share ideas with and get some advice on different aspects of 3ds. I'm also a PC enthusiast and have built many PC systems, mostly HTPC or Gaming HTPC's for friends and myself.

I'm really quite enjoying making up architectural models at the moment as I think this will hone my modelling skills and get me used to knowing which modifier or geometry tweak to use to create a certain effect. I'm also dabbling with the materials side of things and have found quite a few useful tutorials on the net which I've been working thru, both in MR and VRay. I prefer VRay but render times are massive on my little machine LOL!

I'm running Max 2010 32bit version (I know.. I know I need the memory unlocked from 64bit version) on an "OKish" laptop at the moment. However I have put some cash aside now to build myself a dedicated PC for my 3d modelling.

I'm going for the intel i7 960 processor and 12GB ram (triple channel) thru an x58 Mobo. I'm pretty set with this. Although...... has anyone got any good experiences with the AMD 6 core or new 8 core processors. I would be interested to hear.

I'm also looking at either the PNY Quadro 600 card or the Quadro 2000 to put into as dedicated graphics. As I'm very new to this side of the GFX market I would appreciate any comments regarding these 2 cards and if anyone has upgraded from 1 to the other.

Anyways thats enough of me rabbitting on

Thanks and look forward to my journey ahead here

Welcome to the forum, you`ve found the right place based on what you`ve said.

Regards the Quadro cards i`d go with a gamer card as BishBash said unless you`re planning on throwing around huge datasets in realtime.. As for the AMD cpu`s i think someone will chip in with some info.. Basically for rendering, i look at cinebench scores comparing cpu`s, they are pretty real-world and will provide a basis for comparison..

for the pc youre going for

uhm.. yea the 1366 platform is dead and overpriced at this point. speaking of overpriced quadros are even more so, get a nice geforce for the same amount of money that you'd spend on the quadro and enjoy. The amd old 6 and new 8 cores are fine cpus for the money for rendering but not much good for anything else, overall you'd be much happier now and in the future going for either s1155 or s2011 based system.

Seriously?

This shit needs to stop immediately. For a while now, I've been incredibly upset and partially imbalanced at the sight of these "newcommers" to our forums; people of which, who have no regard for the anticipated and much appreciated destruction that we (the vetted members of the forums) cherish when someone new comes on board. Be it far for me to expect much from people these days in terms of the lacking intelligence, modesty, and maturity that are all welcomed traits of a newb to our farms.

But i suppose, in a way; your doing us a favor. Perhaps instead of me flaming you to death for being such an ill competent human being; my fingers will be free to do other things, mainly search for the Cheetos bag i lost about 3 weeks ago behind my computer...

So with that, i wish you a hearty welcome and a warm cup of thanks for fucking nothing; it's people like you that leave me with no one to yell at on here...

*eats Cheetos*

p.s. on a serious note, don't be discouraged in the slightest with the hardware that you're running; it might not be the most powerful beast but it can still make some staggeringly gorgeous images. cheers...

Welcome. Get ready to be killed :D big time.

Learn a lot, take crits seriously, work on it and soon you would be on your way to a good artist.

One thing, respect and follow crits people mention around here. Loads of experience on here.

And I am not new around here :D

Thanks for the warm welcome.

I was contemplating getting the GTX570/580 however, I've done so much reading on the CAD to Gaming graphics cards I've got lost in it all. Some excellent advice there to and it's much appreciated.

I have got some work to share with you however, I'm working on an oil rig out in the North Sea currently so internet access is limited to photobucket, etc during certain times, but I'll stick some images up later on today.

Believe me!!! I am here to learn from you guys and in turn (in a while) repay the favours, so I will happily accept criticism and work on honing in my skills as a modeller.

My HTPC gaming rig in the lounge is a quad core AMD, 4gb Ram and an ATI HD5850 GFX card in which sorts out all my home entertainment needs and gaming needs no problem. I've generally gone down the AMD route and ATI route purely for the price, however I realise that 3D modelling doesn't use low poly's at all so wanted to make sure I was heading in the right direction.

Thanks again everyone and I already have questions that are burning on my mind. It's mostly to do with lighting my scenes.

But first I will post these in the Questions Section.

Anyways this is the "ill competent human being" signing off for now LOL!!!

PS - Enjoy your Cheetos, but if they're green - give them to the dog!
